Simple to order, quick service and simply delicious. The Wagyu Don was simple, but was cooked so perfectly that we seriously couldn’t stop talking about it during our dinner. It had this charcoal, barbecue like char on it that just went heavenly well with the rice. I’m just disappointed we didn’t try this restaurant sooner!!

I went to this restaurant for celebrate my birthday with friends .It’s our first time and i like here. But ! if it’s good should be change to use fresh wasabi not mixed with flour and the tuna sashimi was very small, which could have been better.

Four of us came to Hakoya Izakaya on a Wednesday evening for dinner. We ordered the karaage fried chicken, kimchi udon, salmon sushi, and pork and vegetable hotpot. We were very pleased with the quick service and especially happy that the restaurant gave us a table even though it was very busy and we didn’t have a booking. The restaurant is really cute and each table is tucked away and feels very private, but you can still enjoy the atmosphere of the restaurant. The staff were really attentive, coming back every few minutes to check the hotpot. The food was also really delicious and I would definitely recommend coming here. Thank you so much Hakoya Izakaya!

Delicious food and fresh. Love their seafood udon and fried cheese, the chicken from cheese Katsu was tasteless, but it’s nice with the sauce. Can try it but I don’t order it again.

A cute little Japanese restaurant. The booths are super cute and the food was delicious but I’d recommend coming to this place with a group of people. The dishes are big, definitely meant for sharing with more people. We came with only two people and it was way too much food for us. It was still a great experience, the only down side is it’s an hour and a half for a booking.

Decent Japanese Experience. Good size portions, fresh ingredients and nice ambience. We had the Tuna sashimi, wasabi crisps and Tori Karage. The hot pot broth was delicious and the steamed pork was ok. Quick service, friendly staff comfy seating.

Friendly relaxed vibe, seating in private alcoves with cooking facility at table, ordering via iPad on wall at table, easy to use, food came quickly, cook yourself at table, delicious food, we ordered waygu sukiyaki nabe, cheese tonkatsu and beers, friendly staff…

The wagyu beef hotpot was so delicious and very reasonably priced too! We also had the salmon sashimi which was very fresh, and probably the best gyoza I’ve ever had, as the skin was so delicate and the meat filling was generous! The aburi salmon roll was pretty filling, however the outer layer of the tofu tonkatsu was a tad hard and too crispy, would have preferred a lighter coating that was easier to bite into. But overall, the food was great and I’d come back again!

My friend suggested this Japanese Restaurant while i was visiting for holiday. I tried the fried / katsu menu because i heard they were good, and they were 🤤 Glad i didn’t ordered all the cheese tonkotsu otherwise i would’ve been nauseous 😂 Didn’t try the beef sukiyaki menu because we don’t think we can finish it lol, definitely will come back to try! I love the interior which is mostly booths, so it feels like you’re in a private room at the same time not suffocating you because its open on one side.

Everything we had was very delicious! The camembert tempura was so unique and surprisingly tasteful, and the dragon roll’s unagi is nice and soft. The staff are nice and friendly, and the decor is so beautiful. I love the little private booths!

Have to book. Early arrive have to wait outside in the drizzle 🙁. A few minutes wait and got seated. Place order through touch screen. The food is not so impressive. The hotpot mussels looks dead before they are on the cooker.

Been wanting to try this place for a long time after seeing it lots on social media. It sure didn’t disappoint! 🍤 Their katsu was satisfyingly crispy, sashimi was fresh, and the sukiyaki broth was so flavourful. Being a popular place, it had a dine-in time limit of 90 min per sitting on a Saturday night, but the food came out quickly enough so there was enough time to finish everything. Overall a great joint with cute decor worth trying out! 🏮

Cheese katsu: As a cheese lover, this is heaven. My mate however, says it’s too much cheese overload… good, more for me. Anyway ,this dish is what I came here for and if you dip it in both the rich tartare sauce and tonkatsu sauce then it’ll sure deliver on intensity.. in the best way possible! Nori taco: can’t go wrong. A crunchy, fresh-tasting bite. Beef tataki, the best I’ve had. Great value! I recommend booking in advance as I recall the restaurant doesn’t have too many tables/booths.

Surprised my partner with this choice of restaurant as it was my first time to, he loves Japanese cuisine so I did some research and found this place. The main reason is because of the private booth style & range of food choice. We were both extremely impressed and we will most definitely be back! A huge thank you to ALL the staff their who were so professional and well mannered. After a long day working in a busy work environment it was great to have the private booth it really added intimacy and a relaxing setting to unwind. I would rate 6 stars if I could. See you again very soon! (And thanks for making my date a success)

Had the hotpot, this was my first time and staff helped with the process and the beef was to die for. Would love to try the Okonomiyaki next time.

Before we came, we thought it is a wonderful Japanese restaurant. However, food was okay but not matching the price. If you want to order extra veggies or beef or even just an egg, that will be more expensive than we expect.

Did we order the wrong food on the Menu??? Tonkatsu combo, that was overcooked, rough and tough. Thick batter and left those cheese. Tempura Udon, OMG, overcooked udon, overcooked tempura, nice broth. On the upside, good set up and service.

Loved the whole experience of dining here. The decor is really cool and the booth style seatings ideal – perfect mix of privacy but also still feeling the atmosphere. In terms of food, we really enjoyed the katsu, the hot pot with the beef & udon noodles, the seafood pancake. The highlight for me, was the Nori taco which was sensational. Overall a must go to Japanese spot in Melbourne!

Nice Japanese Izakaya restaurant in the CBD next to Mamak. The nori taco is delicious – the nori itself reminds me of eating potato chips and their katsu tasting platter is worth a try, especially their signature cheese katsu. Hutomaki was probably too big in size so we couldn’t consume each piece as a whole. I’m keen to try their hotpot next! Other diners were having it and it looked great!

A bustling and casual place for Japanese food. The menu is concise but has all that you want. The cheese tonkatsu is an absolute dream – cheesy, crispy and tender. Okonomiyaki and tempura ramen hit the spot too. Will need to try the rest of the dishes next time!

This place is very “japanese” with its iconic style and Ghibli (japanese animation studio) wall paint. East quick order with ipad and bells in the table. Convenient place with great vibes. The food is great, I order cheese tonkotsu and wagyu sukiyaki nabe. They tastes as it looks like in the picture. Interesting cuisine that can be both instagrammable and tastes good also, not perfect but just great Just need to book because they tend to be busy dinner time

Insta: melbfoodie_mark YT: MelbFoodieMark ** Check them out for more food reviews in Melbourne! – Now that the restaurant restriction’s being lifted, I’ve been craving something different to try. Not just a new restaurant but something that’s inherently different to the point where it’s almost peculiar. That’s when I found this new Japanese izakaya that does this thing called Seiromushi – the Japanese method of steam cooking foods in a Hinoki wooden tray. Looked dope enough so I made a reservation. We ordered heaps: Assorted Sashimi, Nabe Udon, Pork Belly Seiromushi, Tonkatsu, Sake Don, Aburi Salmond Rolls, and Salmon Tataki. Generally speaking, they were all fresh and tasty. I liked Nabe Udon ($32) the most because it was bloody cold outside and nothing like a warm broth keeps you warm. Throw in an extra Udon in there and you have enough to feed an entire village. Very worth (would love to try their Wagyu Sukiyaki next time). Pork Belly Seiromushi ($43) was okay but considering how thinly sliced pork belly was, not going to grab it next time. But it was indeed interesting to have steamed pork belly and veggies together with a dipping sauce. I was slightly disappointed that a lot of the dishes on the menu were in fact missing including their Special Seiromushi Combo. But it’s understandable considering COVID. When you make a reservation, ask for one of the booths they have. They are quite spacious but also intimate enough to keep things interesting 😏

The food is amazing, but the waiter (tall Asian guy with the glasses) he has really extra attitude to the client, the way that he tells clients to wait out side of the store, and easily said fully booked without even checking the iPad that shows still have seats are way too aggressive, it’s not your store and you don’t pick and choose client, stop trying to be god. He needs to fix up his attitude before he come to work pls. Be humble, sit down.

Stumbled upon this recently opened Japanese place. Menu is small but… that is important because… when the menu is small, the food is going to be delicious because the attention spent on making that one food is going to be good. you get what you see on the pictures and the taste is even better… the price is pretty good too.

Expensive and not worth its given quality. Ordered their famous wasabi tacos that is highly recommended but came out disappointing. It was tempura seaweed from tao kay noi (thai seaweed snack) topped with offcuts from sashimi. The steamed dish was also disappointing because it was literally just steamed and came with sesame and ponzu sauce. As they are known as an izakaya, my group and I were also disappointed in their drinks list. It was very limited, with only a few beers and sake on offering. We did not drink in the end and decided to go to a bar after our meal instead. Overall, we paid $40 each with no drinks. There are definitely better izakayas out there in Melbourne. If you’re after regular Japanese food, this is probably the place, but if you’re looking for an izakaya to drink and eat with your friends, I’ll probably do not recommend.

I came here several times already but finally got a chance to review it. We were tempted to try something different and choose to order the pork belly seiromushi and cheese tempura set to top it off! The pork belly came with a set of sauce and kimchi like vegetables. It was enough to make 2 people full. The tempura were crispy and the melting cheese on top made it even better! The staff were friendly and was really helpful. When they saw our table was full with foods, they recommended us to move to a bigger table. Overall, it was a good experience.

Great little izakaya that’s cosy (if you can get a booth!). We had the Wagyu beef nabe, nori tacos, karaage and aburi salmon rolls. The Wagyu beef nabe is delicious, the broth was balanced and sweet. Noticed most customers were actually getting that too. Must be one of their top sellers.

An authentic Japanese izakaya and donburi restaurant with the friendliness staff that’s second to none. Booth Seating with an aesthetically pleasing Japanese artwork each created with the owner’s imagination. Let’s first start off with the tempura camembert cheese. 4 crisp balls well crumbed with deep fried cheese. Who knew condensed milk could work so well with the fried cheese. A flavour of savoury and sweet. Assorted sashimi. Firstly have a look at the handcrafted rose radish. Tuna, kingfish and salmon are neatly arranged. Each sashimi is so fresh to the point it melts in the mouth. Combo katsu. A perfect dish when you can pick whuch katsu to have. The cheese katsu whoch is limited is so well crafted with thr cheese being inside. The katsu itself is so crisp and the meat is so tender. Wagyu sukiyaki nabe – a sweet dashi and a soy sauce base. The waiters are so attentive they watch the pot from start finish to ensure when it’s ready to eat. The Wagyu is thinly sliced and complimented with the shiitake, cube tofu, cabbage and udon. Ponzu and egg yolk to comes on the side for dipping. An impressive place for only being opened for 3 weeks. This is by far the best newly opened Japanese restaurants in Melbourne.

I had an amazing experience celebrating my bf’s birthday in Hakoya Izakaya. They offer great selection of food, but the Combo Hinoki Seiromushi (steamed) caught our eyes! It was such a great time seeing the lid opened and revealed the beautifully cooked food 😋 The Izakaya items were great as well! The jumbo prawns were crunchy yet very light. My favorite was the Wasabi Nori Taco that had excellent balanced flavors of fresh and heat. I will definitely be back for more!

Trendy eatery on Lonsdale serving Wagyu Sukiyaki Nabe. Good broth, generous portions of beef, mushrooms, noodles and veg in a delectably flavoursome soy broth. Goes down well with an apple cider drink, with sides of chicken karaage and salmon tataki. Lots of other tables were ordering the signature steam platter, which might be worth a revisit soon!
